T.M.J. Disorder
T.M.J. Syndrome causes a continual cycle of pain, muscle spasm, and joint imbalance where the jaw meets the skull. Effect of T.M.J. disorder can be headaches, earaches, clicking or popping of jaw joint, difficulty opening and closing the jaw, and other dull aches around the facial region.
Grinding teeth and clenching jaws are factors that can lead to T.M.J. Night guards and Occlusal splints are effective methods for treating this disorder.
Sleep Apnea
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when the upper nasal airway is blocked causing pauses in breathing during sleep. The severity can range from short pauses to long pauses and can occur 30 times or more an hour. Snoring is a common, tell-tale sign of sleep apnea followed by silence and gasps for air.
Sleep apnea can lead to tiredness during the day, depression, memory loss, and loss of focus. OSA can lead to serious matters such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and many other problems if left untreated.
Treatments for sleep apnea can include a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device which is a mask that patients can wear on their face at night to keep airways open for adequate breathing. Another alternative is an Oral Appliance (OA) which is an orthotic designed to reposition the jaw to open the airway for breathing.
We work in conjunction with sleep physicians and medical insurance companies in providing this service. Dr. Denzler is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and American Academy of Sleep Medicine. If you have questions about excessive snoring or the oral appliance involved in treating sleep apnea, contact our office.
